If you’re looking for a way to make your Golden Circle experience a little more special, we recommend stopping at Fontana Geothermal Baths & Steam Saunas in Laugarvatn Village.

Book now: Golden Circle Day Tour with Fontana Spa

There you’ll find a series of hot tubs of all shapes, sizes and temperatures. There is plenty of space to relax and enjoy the surrounding nature. In the hot pools are fun stone sculptures which water gushes or trickles out of.

Fontana also has both a traditional sauna and geothermal steam baths. The natural steam baths have boiling hot steam coming straight up from the floor. Because it’s all natural the temperature is changeable, and they might get too hot for you. If that happens, just wait in a hot tub for a minute and go back in.

The natural steam baths of course smell like sulphur. If the smell of sulphur is too eggy for you, the Finnish-style sauna might be a better option. It has a more even temperature and lower humidity level. The Finnish sauna also has a window so you can enjoy the view.

And the view is a beautiful look over lake Laugarvatn. There is a dock into the lake, accessible from Fontana. Brave souls can also have a dip in the lake.

When we went, the lake was still partially frozen, but we still worked up the courage to dive in. Going into the ice cold water was the most revitalising part of the whole day. A truly Scandinavian experience.

Stopping here at the start or end of your Golden Circle Tour will make the whole day more relaxed and fun. We recommend trying Fontana’s tasty soup of the day in the canteen after your relaxing soak.
