Whether you made a resolution or not, it’s always a good idea to jump-start a new year with a mixed bag of songs with a motivational message and/or a beat that bops.

If your resolution was to travel more in 2019, you’re going to want to get yourself psyched up with Reykjavíkurdætur’s song ‘Reppa Heiminn’ where the all-female collective rap about representing the whole world.

And if you’re more of a domestic than an international traveller, Hildur’s ‘Bumpy Road’ is the perfect song to listen to while on a road trip or a walking tour.

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to get fit. A good playlist is an essential component in pushing yourself harder at the gym, so our playlist features songs with a good beat bound to help you achieve your fitness goals.

So we couldn’t resist adding Land og Synir’s late-nineties bodybuilding anthem ‘Vöðvastæltur’ (translation: Muscular) for those looking to leave a life of laziness behind for one of weight training.

Some other common resolutions are: eating healthier food, keeping a cleaner home and learning a new skill. Grýlurnar’s ‘Ekkert Mál’ (No problem) is a sure way to make you clean faster while igor’s ‘Kókomalt’ (chocolate milk) might motivate you to eat healthier.

However, you might want to turn the playlist off if you’re learning to play an instrument or how to speak a new language unless that language is Icelandic.

Our New Year playlist offers both old and new Icelandic songs from lots of different genres, but there is understandably more rap than other genres because there are few things that keep you motivated like sick beats and boastful lyrics. Happy New Year!
