Happy New Year! After last night celebrations, you may be feeling quite delicate and might prefer to take this day as one for recovery! There may be those among you that want to kick off 2019 with something a little different; read on for some tips!
New Year’s Day is a public holiday in Iceland and you can expect nearly everything to be closed. This is good news for the Icelandic work populace as many are bound to be feeling rather fragile after the night before’s celebrations.
It’s a day off for locals to spend time with family, go for a walk if the weather’s fine or simply prepare for returning to a normal work schedule after the luxurious holiday break. However, there are still some diligent people at work to provide you with some entertainment! Here’s what you can do this January 1st in Reykjavík.
Book a Tour
Kickstart the year by exploring one of the most popular routes in Iceland with a difference! You can see the amazing Gullfoss waterfall, the erupting hot springs at Geysir, Þingvellir National Park as well as the magnificent Langjökull glacier on the back of a snowmobile! Book here.
You could ride along in a modified Super Jeep to witness the wonders of West Iceland in one day! On this epic journey, you will visit beautiful waterfalls and bubbling hot springs all from the comfort of a modified Jeep. Embrace this small group experience and book here.
If you would rather stay in Reykjavík, the fascinating Settlement Exhibition is open between 12-6 PM in Downtown Reykjavík. Discover the Viking Age history of the city and visit an open excavation underneath the grounds of Reykjavík.
Go for a Swim
Live like a local and go for a dip in one of Reykjavík’s many open-air municipal swimming pools. What better way to welcome the new year than from a seat inside a bubbling hot tub as the burnt orange winter sun shines over you (hopefully!). The pools are open from 12-6 PM and admission is just under 1000 ISK making them well worth a visit.
Start the year with a party and head down to live events bar Gaukurinn and sing your heart out. This friendly venue in the heart of downtown Reykjavík opens its doors at 8 PM, serving great-priced drinks and your all your favourite tunes. Pick a song and get on stage to show 2019 who’s boss.
