There are only a few days left to get those last minute presents and finish your food shopping before Christmas is well and truly in full swing. To help you fully embrace the spirit of the season, we’ve put together our all-time festive favourites to create the ultimate Icelandic Christmas playlist.
Listen and try to sing-a-long as you wrap gifts for your loved ones or bake that last batch of Yuletide sweet treats. Many of these songs, although sung in Icelandic, are translations of international hits so you’re bound to recognise a majority of the tracks featured.
This seasonal soundtrack kicks off with many peoples’ favourite Christmas tune, ‘Snjókorn falla’, the Icelandic version of ‘Snow is Falling’ by Shakin’ Stevens. Performed by comedian and national treasure, Laddi, this timeless classic is popular among adults and children alike.
The next song is an Icelandic original, ‘Ef ég nenni’ performed by actor and musician Helgi Björnsson. Commonly cited as one of the most popular Christmas songs in Iceland, this dramatic ballad cannot help but move you even if you don’t understand the lyrics.
Another Icelandic favourite is ‘Ég hlakka svo til’ performed by the well-known personality and musician Svala who has also represented Iceland at Eurovision. ‘I’m so excited’ is performed by Svala as a young child and it’s ridiculously catchy.
