With its comfortable seating, moody ambient lighting and large, open-face windows, Klaustur Bar transcends what is expected of a typical hotel bar to become a famed hostelry and wine bar in its own right.

Klaustur is, perhaps, most famous for its large selection of beverages, offering 40 unique spirits from Taiwanese whiskey to Belgian Gin. The menu provides intricate details of the flavours that can be expected within listed cocktails, with their seven different, yet authentically Icelandic-flavoured Gin & Tonic variants proving particularly popular with patrons.

The wine selection is vast and universally acclaimed—both those in-house, and the bottles stored—matching the bar’s mission to increase accessibility to quality wine in Iceland. It is clear that the bar’s sommeliers (wine waiters) have taken an extraordinary amount of time making sure that each wine listed can be recommended and paired with each different individuals’ palette accordingly. A small selection of gourmet snacks is also on offer behind the bar.   

Klaustur Bar has lent its name to a recent political scandal here in Iceland—known in retrospect as Klausturgate—though the details of said sordid affair have nothing whatsoever to do with the bar itself. Scandals or not, Klaustur Bar is still one of the most sophisticated joints to drink in in the city.
