If you’re looking for something out of this world this Iceland Airwaves, look no further than DJ Flugvél & Geimskip (DJ Airplane and Spaceship), a one-woman electro master with psychedelic jet engines, all ready to hurtle you into outer-space.

Steinunn Harðardóttir is the woman behind Geimskip’s playful ‘electronic horror music with a space twist‘, as well as the accompanying hypnotic and weird visual art that complements album design, music videos and most recently, a video game (Imagine Windows Media Player visualisations on a psychotropic cocktail with a pet Pomeranian).

If you’re not familiar with her work, Geimskip’s music is a mixture of gleeful melodies and high pitched vocals that paint colourful dreamscapes over hypnotic synths and bass, weaved together across playful beats.

Performing in Icelandic, Harðardóttir sings of alien and dream worlds inhabited by curious animals and imaginary beasts, such as the Eartheater (Jarðætan), and her energy is genuinely infectious. Through the use of storytelling, incense and smoke, colourful lights and visual backdrops, her live performances invite you along to enjoy an unapologetically quirky journey.

The sounds she conjures up is not for the faint-hearted, and many elements of her music escalate to what can only be described as a psychedelic slap in the face. The child-like and haunting vocals guide you through the eclectic samples and zany instrumentals to create an experience similar to that of a vivid dream.

DJ Flugvél og Geimskip’s 2015 album, Nótt Á Hafsbotni (‘Night at the Bottom of the Ocean’),  was nominated for Best Pop Album at the Icelandic Music Awards, and fans wait in anticipation for her newest album ‘Our Atlantis’, set to be released on the 18th of January 2019.

A teaser for the album has recently been released in the form of a free video game of the same name, created in collaboration with local artist Þórður Hermannsson.  It is available from Geimskip’s website for both Windows and Apple operating systems.

If you can resist an epileptic seizure, it’s a journey through a very trippy landscape in which you have to collect ‘loop creatures’ and fight off snakes with your axe, strangely fashioned out of Pomeranians. If you complete the level, you are awarded access to a new song via Soundcloud. Here, at Guide to Iceland Now, we have not managed to complete the game but have managed to get very dizzy. We wish you better luck!

DJ Flugvél og Geimskip guarantees an extraordinary and theatrical live show this year at Iceland Airwaves, don’t miss the spaceship!
