Conditions for spotting the Northern Lights are said to be highly favourable tonight, especially in the southwest—including Reykjavík and the Snæfellsnes region. The Iceland Met Office predicts clear skies and lively solar activity so be sure to cast your eyes skywards this evening.
Though it is predicted that today will be mostly overcast, the clouds will thankfully retreat just in time for sunset, which will be at 5:17 PM today.
From then on until approximately 2 AM, the forecast predicts clear skies throughout the west and southwest Iceland, an area most popular with visitors who are no doubt eager to catch a glimpse of the shimmering phenomenon.
Northern Lights hunters in this region are blessed with further luck as the Kp rating (also known as the Aurora index) for tonight is projected to be a healthy 4 out of 9, which indicates a strong likelihood of solar activity over the areas free of cloud cover.
Of course, the Northern Lights are as unpredictable as they are beautiful, so no guarantees can ever be made, but if you’re in the country tonight, wrap up warm, go for a wander, and you may very well experience the magical dance of the Northern Lights.
