“Woman at War” (“Kona fer í stríð”), directed by Icelandic Benedikt Erlingsson and written by Ólafur Egill Egilsson, has been nominated for the Nordic Council Film Prize, one of the most coveted awards in the Nordic countries.
The nomination follows in the wake of a smash success at Cannes, where the genre-bending film (it’s part thriller, part comedy, and even part musical) picked up the SACD Award for Best Screenplay (shared by jointly by director and screenwriter), the Grand Rail d’Or audience award from Critics’ Week, and Le Coup de Coeur Cinécole 2018.
The goal of the Nordic Council Film Prize is to draw attention to the Nordic artistic community and to recognize outstanding works. It is awarded to full-length films produced in the Nordic countries with notable cultural value or import.
The award ceremony will take place on Oct. 30, 2018 at the Oslo Opera House, in conjunction with the Nordic Council Session. The Danish krona (DKK) 350,000 (ISK5,862,000/$50,000/€47,000) prize will be shared equally among the winning film’s director, scriptwriter, and producer, which emphasizes the Council’s view that film, as an art form, is the result of open collaboration between these three pivotal players.
In addition to the Film Prize, the Nordic Council annually nominates and awards works of Literature, Children’s and Young Adult Literature, Environment, and Music. The Literature Prize is the oldest of the Council’s prizes, and was first awarded in 1962. The Film Prize was first awarded in 2002.
Erlingsson’s “Of Horses and Men” (“Hross í oss”) was awarded the Nordic Council Film Prize in 2014. Dagur Kári’s “Virgin Mountain” (“Fúsi”) received the prize the following year.
In 2018, five films, all of which will be screened during the 46th Norwegian International Film Festival, have been nominated for the Prize.
